Hey friends! Let’s talk about planting dahlias for a quick minute. In case you haven’t heard Triple Wren will be offering Tissue Culture Rooted Cuttings in addition to our dahlia tuber offerings for shipping in the U.S. and Canada!
Here are some ways that planting rooted cuttings compares to planting dahlia tubers:
- Both require careful soil preparation that includes removing weeds and grasses, fluffing the soil, and possibly amending it so that it drains well.
- Both rooted cuttings (small dahlia plants) and dahlia tubers need 8 or more hours of direct sunlight daily to thrive.
- Both need to be planted after frost.
- Both benefit from fertilization at planting.
- Staking is essential for both, as both should grow to their full height in one season. (We recommend adding the stake at planting so that it won’t damage new or existing tubers.)
- In addition, our Tissue Culture Rooted Cuttings will benefit from a period of hardening off to your specific microclimate, and should be planted so that their growing medium is just covered by the soil in your garden. They should also be watered in and you can begin your irrigation schedule immediately after planting.
- Dahlia tubers should be planted 3”-6” deep into spring-warmed soil, but we recommend waiting to water until sprouts emerge.
