Friends, we’ve been waiting so long to tell you something really special, and TODAY is the day: Triple Wren Farms will offer tissue-cultured rooted dahlia cuttings.
Tissue-Cultured Rooted Cuttings
For over two years we’ve been working hard to create this really special offering, and it is so exciting to finally be able to announce it. The tissue-culture process has allowed us to successfully create dahlia clones from tiny pieces of healthy, virus-tested plants in a sterile environment. We’ve rooted these micropropagated dahlias into sterile, soilless medium in a controlled greenhouse situation, and planted them in our fields this summer where we could observe them growing side-by-side with both tuber-planted dahlias and traditional “rooted cutting” dahlias, with fantastic results.

Rooted Cuttings Sale in October
We are finalizing all the details, but in October we plan to begin pre-selling our most in-demand dahlia varieties. We’ll create the rooted cuttings to order from our tissue culture source material late this winter, and time them to root and be ready to ship in the spring here within the U.S. We’re focusing on the most stunning varieties that we can’t currently meet customer tuber-demand for, so that we can share even more beauty into more gardens and more lives. We’ll announce the varieties which will be available as tissue-culture rooted cuttings before the sale begins.

Dahlia Tuber Pre-Sale
We will still be offering dahlia tubers for sale! That is still our main way to share beauty with the world and we have no plans for that to change. We’ll be having our Dahlia Tuber Pre-Sale soon, so watch your inboxes for that announcement. If you haven’t already subscribed to our email list, now is a great time to do so before all of our sales start.
Exclusive First Access to Our Sales
This spring, we offered just 6 varieties and practiced shipping a few hundred cuttings to our Garden Community (membership has its privileges!), and the response was overwhelmingly positive as our customers opened the boxes and planted their beautiful babies. Our goal is to provide the same beautiful, healthy product again this coming spring, with the benefits of tissue culture propagation to add further peace of mind. If you’d like first access to all of our sales, consider joining The Garden today.

Watch your email inbox or our social media accounts for more info over the next few weeks. We’ll be sharing loads of helpful information about how dahlia tubers and rooted cuttings are the same, how they’re different, and letting you know which dahlias will be available as rooted cuttings!
Hello-
Most exciting that you have figured out how to grow dahlia by tissue culture. I would like to know what viruses you are testing for and which ones are excluded from the cuttings you plan to sell. It is not clear from your posting, if the cuttings are indeed going to be virus free, or if the parental stock has just be tested for virus. I would be very keen to purchase virus free plantlets!
Hi Melody! We’re continually doing testing for the most common dahlia viruses. We’ll be announcing more specific details as we move into September. The easiest way to make sure you stay updated is to subscribe to our email list. There is a link in the banner at the top of this page to subscribe if you haven’t already done so.
Will these dahlia cuttings make a tuber in their first year ?
Hi Kathleen! Yes, the rooted cuttings will make a small tuber clump their first year. We don’t usually recommend splitting the clump for those first year rooted cuttings. We recommend digging them up, storing them over winter, and then planting the whole clump the next year. Hope that helps!
Will you be offering the rooted cuttings for shipment to Hawai’i? ????
Yes! We will be! They are grown in a soilless medium and will undergo all necessary inspections before shipping.
