Many first time dahlia growers are surprised to find that the single finger they planted in the spring has multiplied to a much larger clump of dahlia tubers by summer’s end. If you carefully dig, process, and store this clump of tubers, you can divide it in the spring to make many more dahlia plants for next year!
For our first 7 years of growing dahlias at the farm, we dug and processed everything from our dahlia fields by hand. This video was made in 2018, and while we’ve adjusted some things to be more efficient so that we can grow on a larger scale since then, this is still the foundation of how we handle winter storage of our dahlias and the way we recommend home gardeners clean their tubers.
Storing dahlia tubers is often the trickiest part of the process for new home growers. We recommend that you create a location with 85%-90% humidity that hovers between 40ΒΊ-45ΒΊ to overwinter your tubers. Check your tubers often throughout the winter to be sure they are at the right temperature and to monitor for rot.
