An Update on the Novice Hybridizer Program

One of the greatest joys of our work has been coming alongside dahlia hybridizers and helping their creations find their way into more gardens.

When we created the Novice Hybridizer Program in 2024, we hoped to give newer dahlia creators a path toward evaluation, multiplication, and eventually bringing their work to market. The program has been more successful than we could have imagined. And we have learned something wonderful along the way: novice hybridizers don’t stay novice hybridizers for very long!

The growers we have worked with have continued learning, creating, and bringing forward more beautiful dahlias. As we have welcomed more of those varieties to Triple Wren, the work of evaluating, multiplying, marketing, and distributing them has grown right alongside the program.

We have now reached the limit of how many new hybridizers and new varieties our farm can responsibly take on while continuing to care well for the people and dahlias already entrusted to us.

Because of this, applications to the Novice Hybridizer Program will not reopen in fall 2026.

This isn’t a step away from supporting new dahlia creators. Instead, we’re changing the way we share what we’ve learned.

Over the past year, Sarah has gathered years of experience growing, evaluating, introducing, and distributing dahlias into a new resource called Seedling to Market: A Guide for New Dahlia Creators.

If you have grown something new and are beginning to wonder what comes next, Seedling to Market was written for you. It walks through evaluation and naming, multiplication and market readiness, labor and capacity, marketing and sales, distribution partnerships, and the practical business of bringing a new dahlia into the world.

It will also help you consider an important question: Do I want to bring this dahlia to market myself, wait a little longer, or find a partner to help carry the work?

Seedling to Market will be available in early September, 2026.

You’ve grown something new. Now what? We hope this resource helps you find the next steps in your dahlia adventure!
