Since we’re sliding into a busy weekend, I’d like to tell you a bit of our history before I fully dive into the topic of planning for success in your garden.
I started Triple Wren in 2012, by double-digging several 100’ x 4’ rows in a field that we were borrowing, and direct sowing a ton of seeds because I was so excited about the idea of flower farming.
Earlier that year I’d walked into a public library with my tiny children, and found a beautiful display of agricultural business books. At the top of the pyramid was a book by a woman named Lynn Bycznski. It was called The Flower Farmer, and I took it home… and devoured it. I dug into other books and jumped into the beautiful rabbit hole of Floret Flower‘s burgeoning website, and before I knew it, I’d fallen completely in love with growing flowers. I started dreaming about what *I* could grow beyond my small trellis of sweet peas and patch of spring poppies and summer zinnias.
I jumped in wholeheartedly, learned a LOT by trial & error, and within 18 months, my husband Steve and I were farming together full time.
Within 4 years we were able to purchase our own farm, and now here we are: unlikely flower farmers.
We own about 20 acres, and we currently farm about 12 of it. We’ve gone on a journey from super-beginners who knew nothing about farming, to a place where we’ve grown into calling our business really successful. We now support other families as well as our own, and we’re now seeking out ways to intentionally not just grow our business, but to do good with our business.
I feel, aside from God’s grace and the generous help/advice we’ve received from so many dear friends & colleagues, that the key to our success has been the way that we PLAN for success. We plan *everything,* from using our space well (what we’ll plant where and when!), what we’ll do with what we grow, how we’ll maximize our crops (cuts + seed production, event backdrops, etc.) to how we intend to grow our business from year to year.
I’m excited to share a window into these planning processes with you next week, so stay tuned here or on our Instagram page.
