Did you know that after your dahlia blooms fade, seed pods can form? If your flowers are well-pollinated, after the pods turn dry and papery, you can harvest lovely seeds to plant next spring. Each one will be a unique, hybrid dahlia, often looking nothing like its “mother.”
If you feel your seed pods won’t dry well outside, you can pick them and take them into a low β humidity area with good airflow to finish drying. You can even harvest closed seed pods after frost!
Cleaning your dry dahlia seed pods is a great way to spend a winter evening while you’re waiting on the earth to be ready for seed sowing time.
