Dahlia Comparison: Skipley Spot of Gold and Bloomquist Essence

If you’re able to visit our farm for an event some time, you’ll see why we love growing the 700-ish named varieties we’ve collected for our fields. Besides the amazing beauty, it is so helpful and useful to be able to compare plants side by side for height and vigor, bloom size and color, and to observe how they change throughout the season.

For example, Bloomquist Essence and Skipley Spot of Gold are so fascinating to see side-by-side. BLQ Essence is somewhat shorter than Skipley Spot of Gold, but the blooms are very similar in size and in their unique golden petal tips. BLQ Essence however is a much icier pink color, so its tips look almost fluorescent, while Skipley Spot of Gold is a more intense purple, and its tips look in contrast more golden. Both dahlias are very productive, and keep throwing fantastic, strong stems when harvested regularly. (Remember with dahlias, the more you cut, the more they bloom!)

What other differences/similarities do you see in these two? And which would you like to grow most?! ???? Both dahlias will be available in our tuber sales this fall/winter. Subscribe to our email list to get notifications about our upcoming sales!
