Have you ever made a dahlia flat lay (aka “flatlay” according to Cambridge Dictionary, but I usually stick with two words here)?
It’s easy to do with your extra blooms or “deadheads.” Your flowers don’t even need to look great on the back for this project! They just need beautiful fronts and they need to fit together into a color palette that makes YOU happy. Simple snip the flow heads from the stems and lay them flat on a level surface, arranging to your liking. I encourage you to take your time, and enjoy the textures of the dahlias and the iridescence of their colors. This can be such a peaceful, sensory experience.
In this flat lay (see a video here) I used just six dahlias + a few other bits that made my heart happy. I started with Ice Cube dahlias, then added RobAnn Creamsicle dahlias, American Dawn dahlias, Rebecca Lynn dahlias, some perfectly tiny White Aster dahlias to give a little negative space to the flat lay, and then a pop of SB’s Ora (my new favorite yellow dahlia!). You’ll see some tips of green trailing amaranth, sprigs of bunny tail grass, some of our TWF Antiques zinnias, and a few sprinkled pink snowberries.
If you grow a dahlia garden, I hope one day you’ll try this therapeutic activity, and enjoy experiencing your dahlias in a brand new day!
