Sunflowers, Roses, Flower Therapy

As June comes to a close, we’re seeing the first of our overachiever dahlias showing up to the party, making sure we’re appreciating their flare and singing their praises. Oh how we are, Bloomquist Whimsical, we sure are!

These smatterings of color put a spring in our step as we work the fields: maintaining, weeding, watering and waiting. The waiting part is getting shorter and that energizes us. We’ll be surrounded by color in no time.

We’re thankful we still have roses to enjoy even after the crazy-for-us Pacific Northwest heat wave this week. If you’re wondering how we harvest our roses, Sarah gives some great cutting tips for garden-style roses in this recent Instagram reel. It’s a fun lesson!

Speaking of fun, we want you to meet the newest member of our Crew: Peprika, the mini goldendoodle girl, who’s making herself right at home. She’s working on farm manners and is learning to sniff out pocketed treats from rows away. She seems sure her life’s purpose is to make the flowers look good, and so far she’s going a pretty great job.

Despite cutest-puppy-in-the-world distractions, we planted our enormous sunflower patch last week (with over 25,000 seeds!). We had an Instagram follower ask about our timing for the sunflower sow. We intentionally plant this patch in mid-June in order to have a big splash for our Dahlia Festival on September 4th, because walking through a giant sunflower field in the waning days of summer is something everyone should do at least once in their lifetime (come join us!). We sow primarily procut sunflower seeds because they’re reliably 60 to 70 days from seed to bloom, and not day length sensitive. They’re also pollenless so we can cut bouquets from this patch, and we love offering it as a huge photo opportunity for our guests.

Our first Flower Therapy Workshop was last weekend, focusing on roses, and it was such a special time to inhale the soothing properties of flowers and create beauty besides. We have several out-of-state guests attending our workshops again this year and we’re excited to share the joys of Flower Therapy with as many flower friends as possible.

We hope you enjoy your last day of June, and if you’re needing a smile to get July off to it’s best start, Peprika is happy to oblige. Stay cool, flower friends!
